Frequently Asked Questions

Is overtime taxed differently in the UK?

No. Overtime pay is taxed at the same marginal income tax rate as your regular salary. There is no special "overtime tax rate." However, if overtime pushes your annual income into a higher tax band, the overtime earnings in that band will be taxed at the higher rate.

Do I pay National Insurance on overtime?

Yes. Overtime earnings are subject to Class 1 employee NI at the same thresholds and rates as regular pay: 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 per year, and 2% above that.

What is time-and-a-half (1.5x)?

Time-and-a-half means your overtime rate is 1.5 times your standard hourly rate. If you normally earn £15/hr, your overtime rate would be £22.50/hr.

Can my employer force me to work overtime?

Only if your employment contract allows it. If your contract says overtime is voluntary, your employer cannot compel you to work extra hours. Acas guidance recommends checking your contract or speaking to HR.
